Install Your Air-Cooled Volkswagen Windshield With Ease

Installing your AirCooled VW glass can be an intimidating task for the weekend mechanic. With the right preparation attention to detail and a friend replacing your VW’s windshield and seal becomes a manageable project.

Before placing a new seal around your VW glass make sure the seal is warm or slightly stretched to improve flexibility. Once you have placed the seal around the glass position a heavy string or cord in the seal groove closest to the inside of your Beetle Bus Type 3 or Ghia. The string should be longer than the seal by at least 2 inches so it overlaps inside the groove. This will aid in the proper positioning and fit of your windshield.

To prevent the seal from backing off the window before installing into the window opening use liquid dish soap or a window cleaner such as MWorks Glass Cleaner. Lubricate the inner edges of the seal and the window frames with liquid dish soap.

After placing the glass/seal as a unit into the VW windshield opening have your friend press the glass gently from the outside starting at the lower end. As you pull the string have the other person press firmly on the glass with the palm of their following the path of the string.

Always be careful not to press too hard. The string pulls the inner lip of the seal over the inside of the window frame. Outside the vehicle use a blunt hooked tool or a popsicle stick to lift the outer lip of the seal into place. Never make contact directly with the glass when using other tools as possible damage may occur. After installation a light coating of silicone grease is recommended to protect the seal by preventing the rubber from drying out and thereby extending its useful life.

NOTE: A common comment we hear from our customers is that the rubber seals they receive are a gray color and not black rubber as they expected. This is due to a soapstonebased mold release solution used during the manufacturing process. It helps the rubber pieces pull out of the molds more cleanly and also helps the workers separate the seals when dealing with large bulk quantities.
